User Experiences with Sophia Electric New 45 Tubes

Hi Sophia Electric,

The 45 tubes arrived on Friday, May 22, 2026, and I spent the weekend with them. Compared to my older 45 globes and STs that I have, the sound quality is a significant step up, and I'm enjoying them immensely. I wanted to pass that on to you.

Hi Sue,

I’ve had the opportunity to spend considerable time with one of the early trial pairs of the new RCA UX245-inspired 45 tubes from Sophia Electric, and they’ve genuinely become one of my favorite current-production 45 tubes.

What impressed me most is how they balance detail with musicality. Many modern tubes in general can lean heavily toward an ultra-detailed, analytical sound e.g. I found the EML solid plate to sound that way, but these Sophias manage to preserve detail while still sounding smooth and organic.

The sound evolved noticeably with burn-in. The bass initially came across very powerful and slightly loose, but over time tightened up beautifully while remaining full and authoritative. The highs are detailed and extended without becoming harsh or fatiguing, and the transition from mids to highs became increasingly seamless and cohesive with more hours.

The midrange is where tube character matters most to me, and these tubes have a very engaging presentation. Vocals and instruments sound natural and textured, with an airy and increasingly holographic quality developing over time. What I particularly appreciate is that they are void of sounding sterile or clinical, which is becoming harder to find in modern production tubes, but also have that typical vintage 45 tube sweet holographic richness that makes this type of triode so special amongst audio connoisseurs that know it.

Compared with other 45 tubes I’ve owned and heard, including various ST-style designs and the EML Globe Mesh Plate, EML ST solid plate, the Sophia stands out for its vivid presentation and character in the mid-range (to me because I care about it most). The vintage UX245 still has a uniquely liquid and lively midrange presentation that is difficult to replicate, but the Sophia comes surprisingly close while offering a more balanced overall tonality. Among modern production 45s, it is the most musically satisfying and emotionally engaging version I’ve experienced.

Depending on what other tubes I mix into my audio chain these 45s surprise me on what and how sounds come out of my speakers – they are fascinating.

Best,

Robert
