User Reviews/Feedback for Sophia Electric™ KT88 Amplifiers

Received date: December, 2011

Hi Richard,

I am very happy with the sound of the KT-88 monoblock amps with the new Output Transformers (OT's). There is now a beautiful marriage of both power, including in the bass registers and beauty. KT-88's are known for their power, not often their beauty which is quite an achievement! Even Albert Von Schweikert, the Speaker Designer, who only likes 300-B's or EL-34's liked them and said it was the first KT-88 amplifier he could listen to an enjoy.

Albert Von Schweikert is a well-known Speaker Designer. He has a formal Engineering Degree from Cal-Tech. He worked with several speaker designers including Oscar Heil who designed the Heil Tweeter Driver. He designed raw speaker drivers for a number of companies over the years. He spent some time at JPL Labs Aerospace Center for NASA in Pasadena, CA. Except for a short period at Counterpoint for a few years, Albert has had his own Speaker Company since 1977.

Richard -

I picked up my new Sophia Electric KT-88 amp from you last week. It replaces the Sophia Electric EL34 amp, matched with your S.E.T. Princess Model 2 speakers, as my primary listening room setup. I previously provided you very positive feedback on the EL34 and S.E.T. Princess Speakers Model 2's combination.

Although the KT88 amp is new and yet to be broken in fully, I want to provide you some immediate impressions.

Right out of the box, the visual impact is one of majestic elegance. Fit and finish are impeccable - an object d'arte.

First few days of listening through your KT88 and Model 2's:

As pleased as I am with your EL34 amp, which has performs well beyond its price range, the KT88 exceeds all my expectations. Soundstage, transparency, and response provide an emotive listening experience that I have heretofore only read about in audiophile commentary on a few select, high-end amplifiers. 3-D imaging, particularly in acoustic and jazz recordings, is as close to live presentation as I have ever heard. Crystalline transparency combines with articulate mids and tight, deep bass. Complex overtones and harmonics are revealed in well recorded acoustic music, allowing the beauty of the music to captivate the listener with aural highlights I am sure most other amplifiers never approach. Presentation is one of tonal purity and a total lack of colorization. It is effortless for the listener to isolate and focus on a particular musician within the soundstage, while the music washes over you.

I am thrilled with this amp. And, I know it will continue to reveal its capabilities as it fully breaks in. I am confident you have created a tour de force in KT88 technology.

This amp I have found to be very special.

Why? Because I have never heard a tube amp so harmonically correct and at the same time so resolute (without being bright). How resolute? It is the most resolute amp I have heard.

Considering I have owned over a dozen "State-of-the-Art Tube Amps" in the $10,000 to $40,000 price range and have never been so impressed.

I feel that a significant part of the reason for the magic of this amplifier is the easy flow of the music(musical) and super low distortion without much feedback.

Now this piece is only 50 watts, but it is a solid 50 watts. If your speaker is not overly inefficient, this amp is for you.

I know you will be pleased. This is not just a great amp, it is State of the Art.

If you need more power and have more money to spend, buy the mono-blocks. I have one pair of the Mono-block version on order and got the loaned stereo unit to play with before the mono-block to be made. I will report in detail over the next few weeks.

Happy Listening!
